Our Top 6 Commercial Gym Design Ideas

After a long year of lockdown, gym-goers are itching to get back to their commercial gyms to make up for lost workout time, but the right design is still vital for keeping your members coming back time and again- so what ideas can you, as a gym owner, implement to keep your clients loyal and stand out amongst your competitors?

There are tonnes of innovative ideas out there that you can use to elevate your gym to the next level and support the training programmes of even top athletes. From outdoor gym spaces to custom design equipment, the possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.

To inspire your design and help you decide what’s right for your gym and its members, we’ve created a roundup of some of our favourite gym design ideas below. If you want to find out more about how to get the most out of your commercial fit out, read our article here

Outdoor Gym Design

During the Coronavirus lockdown, 72% of gym members took to the great outdoors to maintain their fitness- and who can blame them? The great outdoors has extensive physical and mental health benefits proven by years of research, including improvements in things like blood pressure and stress.

As commercial gyms reopen, demand for outdoor workouts could be here to stay, and so gym owners need to be willing to offer that flexibility to their members, whether it’s in the form of

outdoor rig

a permanent space allocated to outdoor workouts or offering outdoor classes as the weather warms up.

If you prefer to create a permanent outdoor gym space, your choice of equipment needs to be incredibly durable and weather resistant so that it lasts- think hardy, rust-resistant materials like galvanised steel and powder coatings. Some of the best outdoor design ideas also include simple, functional equipment that does well against the elements with little need for upkeep.

Free-standing rigs make a great choice for multi person use in the fresh air, and the additional features such as monkey bars, bunch bags and pullup bars cater for dynamic full-body workouts. You can find out more about finding the right rig for you in our article here.

At Anvil, we’ve designed, built and delivered hundreds of outdoor gyms that are made to last through all the elements- find out more about our building process here

Small Gyms/ PT Studios

Outdoors you may have all the space in the world, but when it comes to smaller gyms and PT studios where you need to carefully utilise every inch of space, more compact design ideas are the way to go.

This requires a clever choice of layout design and equipment. If you want permanent fixtures for multi-person use, wall-mounted rigs are a smart choice, as they take up less space than their free-standing counterparts. The more space you have, the more bays you can include in a single piece of equipment.

For racks, there is a whole range of options for smaller spaces. One option is the folding rack, which is fitted against the wall. When it’s not in use, it can be collapsed flat against the wall where it’s fixed. Want a different wall-fitted rack without the hassle of folding? Survival racks are sleek and sophisticated with low impact design, making them a great option for any commercial gym setting.

You can read our guide to finding the perfect rack for your gym in our guide here.

When you’re dealing with limited space, portable equipment that you can move around as and when needed helps you to adapt your space- something that’s important if you’re teaching a range of classes that need different setups.

The Attack Ski Machine combined with the Attack Ski floor stand is a perfect example of this- the ski machine delivers unbeatable strength and endurance workouts, while the non-slip floor stand has small caster wheels to easily move it back and forth between sessions.

Cardio Kit

Any commercial gym needs a great selection of cardio kit. Some of the best options include user-activated equipment that provides extra resistance for an even more challenging workout combined with simple contemporary design that doesn’t require expensive upkeep or repairs.

Our top recommendations for cardio kit includes:

  1. Air Attack Bike– The air attack bike provides a great high-intensity workout for anyone that uses it, and includes a durable high-resistance fan for a smooth ride.
  2. Attack Fitness Rower Machine– The attack fitness rower machine one of the best selling indoor rowers in the world which are used widely by top-level athletes, making it a must-have for any commercial gym that wants to provide the best quality equipment.
  3. RUN Attack Curved Treadmill– The RUN attack curved treadmill takes traditional treadmill workouts to the next level. Its curved concave design mimics what it’s like to run in the natural environment and is designed for high-intensity sprinting. It’s powered by the movement of your legs instead of electricity, so you get out as much as you put in- it’s not for the faint-hearted, but put the effort in, and you’ll get amazing results.
  4. Attack Ski Machine– The attack ski machine delivers one of the toughest workouts around and can be used for a range of movements including double pole and alternating arm technique. The machine reacts to the user’s movements so suits every level of fitness from beginner to advanced.

Combine any of these with your functional kit for everything your members could need.

Accessories

When you’re designing your new gym fit out, it’s easy to get sucked into what ‘big’ purchases you’ll be making, but only focusing on your choice of heavy-duty kit will only get you so far- there are also things like kettlebells, plates and barbells to think of.

Choosing the right accessories can make all the difference to your members’ workouts, especially if they’re looking for equipment that can support improvements in form or reduce strain during workouts.

If you want to maximise the effectiveness of your kettlebells, plates and barbells, find out what you should be looking out for in our article here.

Colour schemes & branding

Choosing the right equipment for your commercial gym is only half the battle- designing ideas to make it recognisable as your own and aligning to your brand can be much more challenging.

custom gym equipment

This is where aspects like custom colour schemes and branding come in. With the right supplier, you can get equipment designed with your branding in mind.

Brands typically have 7 seconds to make a good first impression, and it will only take your members 90 seconds to make a subconscious judgement about the kit they’re using, so if you want gym equipment that’s going to impress and keep your members loyal, custom details will make all the difference.

At Anvil, we’ve been commissioned to make hundreds of kits with this kind of customisation and are able to offer laser-cut engravings, colour and branding across every piece of equipment. Click here to find out more.

Design process- 3D modelling

Once you have all these aspects of your gym design picked out, how can you be sure that the finished fit out will be what you had in mind? Investing a lot into your gym can be an expensive risk to make if you’re doing it blindly.

The right choice of supplier will go into granular levels of detail about your overall design in the consultation stages and use tools like 3D rendered modelling to provide a visual representation of your finished gym before you commit.

There are a whole bunch of additional services you should expect from any premium commercial gym manufacturer- if you’re not sure what you should be looking out for from your supplier, you can find everything you need in our article here.
